About

I am an interaction designer and lecturer. I research solar-powered computing, the history of weaving and global scale augmented reality sculpture.

Ever since I saw the Wizard of Oz I’ve been interested in the mechanisms or systems that enable stories to be told or society to function. I am interested in making work that allows for real-time interaction between people, places, stories and objects through the use of technology.

Currently:

Universal Everything
Since 2019 I’ve been the Interactive Creative Director at Universal Everything.

Creative Computing Institute, Camberwell, University of the Arts London
Since 2019 I’ve been a lecturer on the Diploma in Creative Computing at the Creative Computing Institute at Camberwell.

Arts Emergency
Since 2017 I’ve been a mentor on the Arts Emergency scheme, which aims to increase access to the arts and humanities to young people from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Year Here
Since 2015 I’ve been a member of the faculty of Year Here as well as a mentor. Year Here aims to help recent graduates build smart solutions to entrenched social problems.

BIOGRAPHY:

From 1998-2001 I studied Mathematics and Computer Science at Imperial, before completing an MA in Interaction Design at the Royal College of Art between 2001-2003. Post-graduation I worked at Benetton’s communication research centre, Fabrica, before returning to London where I worked as the interaction designer at UnitedVisualArtists – touring with U2 and Massive Attack, as well as working on public installations such as Monolith, Volume and Hereafter. From 2008-2010 I co-founded the interactive collective YesYesNo with Theo Watson and Zachary Lieberman. Also in 2008 I co-founded the craft, design and technology studio Hellicar&Lewis. The studio ran until 2016 with the express aim of building a creative business around Open Source. In 2011 I co-founded Cariad Interactive with Wendy Keay-Bright, a studio based around creating interactive software for young autistic people and adults with profound and multiple learning difficulties. In 2014 I was made a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. In 2019 I started teaching the Diploma in Creative Computing at the Creative Computing Institute in London. Also in 2019, I became the Interactive Creative Director at Universal Everything.
